I think she's right, savage is the word. There were a few comical comments but only because of the sheer stupidity, while most of it's just pure venom and disgusting to read or listen to. I actually ran into PrincessJoules on YouTube about a week ago after watching some old Jerry Springer clips coincidentally, and I remember thinking then about how little has changed for a lot of people in the last 20 years with respect to views about trans women. A lot of people change very suddenly when the subject comes up, and I find it surprising sometimes because that vulgar side even comes out of people you wouldn't expect it from (people who, imo, should know better), at least from my experience. I think a lot of it has to do with ignorance, since trans people were never really in the public eye in any sort of "normal-seeming" way, usually being associated with some extreme form of sexual taboo. Then again, even until relatively recently, homosexuality was considered a mental disorder, and as you probably all know, people were getting electroshock treatments and stuff like that for it, which is horrific. It's weird in a way, because things could very easily regress, and I think this is actually very relevant to the thread topic.

In all seriousness, I think the answer to this in any meaningful way is the legal approach, whether it comes to anti-discrimination and harassment laws, holding people to them and taking these things more seriously, tougher sentences for discrimination-based assault, murder, etc. in order to show that it's not going to be tolerated in our society, whether it's the product of extreme religious views or bigotry. This obviously has relevance in other areas as well - I think we should have much larger sentences for acid attacks, for instance. Personally, it bothers me to even see this sort of behavior in the West, especially when it's brought here from another culture. They basically bring one of the worst things with them, instead of bringing the best things that anyone in their right mind can see value in.
