The simplest way I can think of to put it is this
Transvestite - Dresses as the opposite gender for sexual reasons
Crossdresser - Dresses as the opposite gender for whatever reason
Transgendered - Identifies as the opposite gender, what they chose to wear doesn't matter.
If a female identifies as a female, but enjoys presenting a guy sometimes, she is a crossdresser.

Ok, I never intended to post. I joined this site because I was interested in attitudes towards transwomen. But the misuse of the terms by people who should know what they mean is driving me nuts.
crossdresser - someone who dresses as the opposite sex as a sexual fetish
transvestite - their dressing may have some component of sexual fetish but they tend to go beyond that and they may live a large portion of their lives as the opposite gender even though they identify as their birth gender.
transsexual - someone who identifies as the gender opposite their birth gender. They can choose to express their identity in different ways and may be pre, post, or non op.
shemale - an adult movie term for a transgendered performer
transgendered - this is an umbrella term that includes anyone and everyone that plays with gender boundaries. While this term does include transsexuals it also includes crossdressers, transvestites, and even drag queens.
Think of the word transgendered like the word automobile, it doesn't tell you very much. If I told you I was sitting in an automobile right now I could be sitting in anything from a lotus to a greyhound bus. When I tell you I'm transgendered I'm being just as vague. However, when I tell you that I'm a non op transsexual woman I'm being very specific.
Those definitions are not just my opinion. Those are the the definitions used in both the social work field and the psychiatric field. Except for the term shemale, that one you will not find in the DSM-V or any other diagnostic manual or text book.
Why the strife between the groups? A lot of it is political, often transsexuals see transvestites as detrimental to their efforts to achieve equal rights. That's also one of the reasons gays are hostile towards those who are transgendered. In addition, we all judge other people based on our own experience. For instance, gay men see transsexuals and assume that the transsexuals are also gay men who can't deal with being gay and transition to make their attraction to men acceptable to society. This is of coarse nonsense, but based on the gay males experience it is the intuitive answer. And finally people like to build up their self confidence by telling themselves that they are better then next group.

All those labels - cd, tv, tg, ts - I would have thought that this is one community that recognizes the shortcomings in labelling people. It seems to me that all those involved in pushing the gender envelope have a lot of common interests and it would be far better to focus on those than the differences between the various groups. And I do realize that a hairy guy who likes to wear his wife's panties from time to time has no business claiming the same 'status' as a fully transitioned person.
A good friend of mine describes herself as a crossdresser. A lifelong thing, sexual at first but that has waned. It caused the breakup of her marriage after which she decided to explore her feminine side further. She now lives 90% of the time as a woman, has come out to family, children, neighbours etc and is in a committed relationship with a woman who accepts her nature. No surgery or hormones and no intention to. But through her dress sense, weight management etc has become very convincing (not an easy thing to do in middle age), has joined and been accepted by various women's groups. So what label would you put on someone like that?
Ultimately, wherever you may be on the gender spectrum, if it works for you and you are content with where you are that should be enough. And anyone has the right to be who they are without judgment and condemnation from others.

Clone. Regarding this thread it was created before th other involving the flaming wars between some of the girls here. This thread I created was solely for discussion somehow it seemed that the arguments from the other deleted thread traversed onto this one.Originally posted by Clone 0101 View PostSo because I was the first to cast the stone it makes it ok for her to throw back? When she snarled back that is when she was no longer a victim to the situation. I really could care a less if she is a cross dresser or shemale. I would have called any of these girls by the male counter part etc... It had nothing to do with her status at all. She had a holier than though approach to every rebut and quite frankly it was what provoked me. She kept name dropping and trying to pin her justifications for posting the thread on others when she clearly posted in the subject "I have a problem"... Quit blowing smoke up our asses and be real.

Another thing
Everybody.
I was generalising in my original post. Not once did I give a definition of the said groups. Others did but not I. The whole labeling thing sprouted due to perhaps some misconceptions
What I did say was it seems that within any group/community there seem to be assumption that tie people together into thinking in different ways.
I provided a perspective about what the difference is in knowing and not knowing or just understanding something.
Now I still think there is a bond between all groups within the community but the question still remains as to what key factor or factors cause hatred/dislike? It's a question that truly can't be given a concrete answer as the scenarios and circumstances are infinite but thats the beauty of discussion but if you're going to try and be an opportunistic selfish ass and try and better yourself or others or do the opposite and bash anyone who doesn't agree with you then you are totally missing the point here and I'd have to question why be part of this thread at all?
You want good conversation then that sounds great but if you want to swear and bite and kick and all that find a punching bag then. I can't stop you of course but in the end you're not going to look credible.
