Mexico is specifically set up to protect tourist from the evils of the country.

Mexico is one of the most dangerous countries to visit on earth. If you stay in resorts and hotels you are protected.
You may have been to Mexico city but I doubt you have been anywhere remotely dangerous. Which describes most of the city.
Mexico has a huge periphrial squatter zone which Bangkok does not have, this in itself is dangerous squalor much worse that anything you can find in Thailand. I have been everywhere in Thailand and there is no specifically dangerous places. Laos and Cambodia are the same.

The biggest difference is the people in Thailand are much more respectful unlike latin culture which is very violent.
Men in Mexico have machismo, men in Thailand have respect and face.
Also there is very few Thais in dangerous gangs like those that torment Mexico. In Thailand the establishment in well in control of independant gangs and criminal operations.

I've been all over Mexico.. I've driven from PV to Guadalajara and back twice right through the middle of the country.. I spent 3 weeks living in a tiny town of 500 people 2 hours north of Salulita.. Rural Mexico is very different than tourist mexico.. way cheaper too.. I know Mexico like you know Thailand.. Right now the Mexican government is at war with the corrupt officials, drug gangs and such trying to clean up the country..

So far the only bad place I've been warned about is MBK open market.. seems there's a rash of purse cuttings going on there lately.. the hotel and the Dr. told me to be very careful if I go there.. It's not like I go looking for the bad places..

It was different tho to see military guards at Nana last night tho.. 2 at the front.. 4 inside.. checking everyone's bag at the gate they set up at the entrance.. I did read what you wrote but the fact is Mexico is far more dangerous than Thailand.
You are not safe in Rural Mexico, it may seem safe but there is so much drug and gang activity.
I can list off a dozen of my friends that have had serious trouble in Mexico.
One is dead because he decided to drive down there. His car was never found but his body was found after he had been dragged alive across the desert behind a vehicle. Probably something they did purely for fun.

Anyway this thread is about Thailand not Mexico, I just wanted to clear this up as there were many misconceptions about how expensive and dangerous Thailand is. The worst part is really the flight difference as far as North American tourists go.

As recently as this year, I have driven from Bangkok right up north through the Isan region and over to Chiang Mai, and a few points in between. Never, ever, did I have any issues. Not one. I don't go there specifically as a sex tourist, I go because I really enjoy the "real" Thailand away from the tourist marketplace. I think people see the craziness around the tourists and project that on the rest of the country.

Mexico of 2014 , driving from small town to small town is asking for trouble, car jackings etc. and you would be a divine soul if you didn't have something get in your face that cost you money in order to stay safe. There really is a big difference right now. Will Mexico clean up? I hope so because back in the early 2000s I did a lot of rural driving in Mexico and it was great. I wouldn't dare do it now.

Well.. I have to agree with Crag that overall Thailand is a bit cheaper, a bit safer and the people on the whole more polite.. Even here in Bangkok which is one of the largest cities in the world everyone seems very happy.. other than some disgruntled tourists.. The cost of the flight from Vancouver is only a few hundred more than going to Cancun or something as well I paid $1050 return on Expedia all taxes included, one stop with a 2 hour layover in Guangzhou China.. It's a long ass way to fly tho.. even from Vancouver 16 hours fly time.. from Toronto..add another 4 hours for a total of 20 hours in the air..

Additionally the general atmosphere here is very accepting and open to everyone. the only rude people I have encountered so far have been white tourists.. The tgirls here are absolutely stunning too.. well some of them.. girls like Viva and Isabella (so sexy) are commonplace here..

The party atmosphere here is different too.. You cannot find these wild ass parties anywhere else in the world.. Well except maybe in Amsterdam with GG's... but that's 4 times the money..
